THE SKINNY: While speaking to reporters today about the two-hour series finale of 24 (airing May 24 on Fox), showrunner and executive producer Howard Gordon spoke about the status of the 24 movie.

“Billy Ray has written a draft that Kiefer [Sutherland] has read,” says Gordon. “We’re all working together on the second draft. There’s no official status. It’s very much a work in progress. The movie division is on the other side of the lot, and I can’t measure their intentions or their timing and can’t measure their reaction to the script because they haven’t read it. I will preference, sooner than later, [because I want] to get Jack out in front of people within a year or two, but I don’t know. That would be just me speaking.”

The ultimate goal of the series would be to honor the spirit of Jack Bauer, and less the 24-hour conceit which would be impossible to do in a feature film.

“The epiphany was to do movie because Jack is a great character,” says Gordon. “Take the real-time conceit out of the equation, which is a huge part of the show and Jack as a character that has gotten broad shoulder to carry a movie in this genre. We really want to honor series and integrity of character and bring a whole group of new group of people to the franchise who will go back and watch [the show] and see it was consistent. We recognize we’re serving two masters and two audiences. I think what is important that we do, is not retread, and make sure that like every series, and every season, we’re moving forward with the character. He will be in a different place than where he’s been before and [we’ll] define that space and figure that out.”
