fire crews are clearing brush in area parks, Caltrans is mowing down roadside wildflowers and brush, fire depts
are telling homeowners to keep a "defensible" space by clearing out vegetaion close to the houses...ahem..and nobody is batting an eyelash. Now, do you really think any of this matters when a hot ferocious sundowner wind blows flames to your house? Of course not! To maybe stop a fire you would have to cut down every tree and bush and pave the mountains with concrete...
It's an exercise in futility because the real solutions are not yet viable..but let's explore them anyway...you need to watch out for the real things that start fires, not some flowers on the road or tall trees. Ask your fire district if they have any patrols during fire season, 24 hours a day? They should. Is there a fire station in the mountains? Why not? It should be mostly funded by the folks who live in the fire areas. Do the area schools like Westmont, private and located in the wealthy hilly terrain, teach fire prevention common sense to students and prospective students so they don't wander up to the Tea Gardens and start fires? They should. Are there any controlled burns happening? There should be...dead dry brush needs to be controlled if more houses are going in where they shouldn't. Are there any rules on how to maintain trails or do trolls just do whatever they want without thinking about Von Caw's Law of Unintended Consequences? There should be...
Fire drills by the Fire Districts are all well and good, but what really needs to happen is a change in behavior, people need to take responsibility for their own choices and not make the rest of us subsidize their lifestyle...Take Coyote Road for example..there were way too many houses allowed to be built there...and most burned down..where was their fire plan?? head for the ocean!!
running around like a bunch of chickens with their heads cut off won't stop fires...and fires are necessary in hills...so you can work with nature or against her and if you make a mistake, she'll score 10 runs in a hurry..it's up to you...it's all up to you....
