My '24' Tribute (AddictedTo24 Exclusive)

It's hard to believe there won't be a 24 season premiere in January of 2011.

After 8 seasons, 24 has ended it's run on television and  as a result, there are many sad fans all around the world. Thankfully, there seems to be a movie version on the way and possibly a franchise of films, hopefully. But Monday nights in the U.S. from January through May will never be the same without Jack Bauer.

I wanted to write this article to convey how much this show has meant to me on a personal level and will continue to mean even though it will no longer be on television.

I came to 24 a little later than most. I remember seeing ads for the premiere of season 1 several times and was surprised to see Kiefer Sutherland was going to be doing a TV show. At the time he was mostly known  as a movie actor. For some reason I kept forgetting about the show (silly me!) until finally I watched the season premiere of season 4 after an NFL playoff game.

It may be exaggerating to say my life changed forever that day but in a way it did. That first episode had me addicted right away. I had never seen any other show like it. Everything about it was different: the real-time concept, the race against time, the boxes, the edge-of-your-seat tension, the music, the wonderful writing and acting and of course Jack Bauer himself, Kiefer Sutherland who was the core and heart and soul of 24.

I could always take or leave most television shows, but 24 was different.

After episode one of season 4...I was in love. ♥♥

24 was not just another television show, it became a way of life.

Needless to say, I couldn't get enough of 24 after that day. After season 4 was over, I went out and bought every prior season of 24 on DVD and spent that summer watching seasons 1-3. I fell in love with the show and Jack Bauer even more! So much so I started collecting everything 24, books, magazines, Jack Bauer action figures, posters, mouse pads, you name it. Even my office at work became 24-central!

 My Office

Then in August of 2008 I started this blog. Because of it I have made contact with many other 24 fans from all over the world and that has been a real pleasure. Additionally through Twitter, 24 fans such as myself have been able to connect with some of the actual people who worked on the show.

One of the things I will miss most about 24 is reading about the casting for the upcoming season and reading hints here and there about what the upcoming season may be about. That was almost as fun as watching the season itself because it helped get you excited for the premiere of the new season. I will miss all of that a great deal.

As great as the concept of the show was and everything else I mentioned before about what made 24 so special, perhaps what has given the show its heart is Kiefer Sutherland's portrayal of Jack Bauer.

I seriously believe 24 would not have lasted 8 seasons if Kiefer Sutherland had not been cast as Jack Bauer. No other actor in my opinion could have given this character the wonderful complexity and nuance Kiefer has brought to that role.

Kiefer's dedication and love for this character always came through in his performance. What made Kiefer's performance so amazing was his ability to brilliantly play Jack as the in-your-face, at times brutal counter-terrorist agent but just as effectively he could also be a sweet, kind, gentle man  with the people he cared most about.

He could shock you with his cold detachment and brutality at times, such as  with his interrogation of Pavel, the Russian operative who killed Renee Walker, and then he could break your heart when watching his heart-felt video to his daughter he planned on leaving since he believed he would not make it through day 8 alive.

Thankfully, Jack Bauer did make it through day 8 alive. The last part of the finale was just perfect and I could not think of a better way to end the series. Jack's good-bye to Chloe was beautiful in it's simplicity and  wonderfully acted by both Kiefer and Mary Lynn Rajskub.

I can't think of any other TV drama that I have enjoyed more than 24 or an actor who was more perfect for the role of Jack Bauer than Kiefer Sutherland. Thank you Kiefer for bringing Jack Bauer to life in such a real and moving way. Also thanks to everyone involved in the creation of this iconic TV show. These last 8 seasons have been a wonderful ride!

This 24 fan will be forever grateful.

See you again at the movie theater, Jack!
