Top 10 Saddest Moments on 24 (5/24/11)

**WARNING – SPOILERS!**

One year ago today one of the best shows on television aired its final episode. Yes, it was indeed a very sad day for 24 fans everywhere. As a tribute, I’ve decided to recall the many moments of 24 that tugged on the viewer’s heart-strings, the moments that made them cry, the moments that left them stunned when the episode (or scene) ended with a silent clock. Here are my top ten saddest moments of 24:

10. Jack breaks down at the end of Day 3 (Day 3: 12:00PM – 1:00PM)

After all Jack went through during Day 3 – recovering from a heroin addiction, breaking drug lord Ramon Salazar out of prison by causing a riot, chopping off his partner’s hand, finally avenging his wife’s death by killing Nina Myers, and forced to execute his boss under the orders of Stephen Saundersit was only a matter of time before he broke down. You can feel the anguish that Jack feels during this scene, what makes it all the more sadder is the fact that despite everything that’s happened, he still has work to do.

9. The Death of Bill Buchanan (Day 7: 8:00PM – 9:00PM)

One of the coolest characters of the show gets to go out in a blaze of glory. Bill Buchanan sacrificed himself to save President Allison Taylor and the rest of the hostages at the White House from General Benjamin Juma. The list of Jack’s closest friends continued to dwindle and Bill was definitely one of the last few that remained. Bill was honored with a silent clock.

8. Jack reconciles with Kim (Day 7: 1:00AM – 2:00AM)

After being shunned by Kim during Day 5, Jack has the opportunity to reconcile with his daughter after he’s been exposed to a bio weapon. Jack’s declining health adds even more to their emotional reunion. Jack’s love for his daughter has always provided some touching moments on the show (see below) and this scene is no exception.

7. President Omar Hassan is Assassinated (Day 8: 7:00 AM – 8:00 AM)

It’s safe to say that nobody was expecting President Hassan to be assassinated and in such a brutal fashion. The look on Jack’s face says it all as he realizes that he and Renee were too late to save Hassan. Jack suffered a failure and the nation’s peace treaty involving the IRK, not to mention the nation itself, was now in danger and the bad guys ultimately managed to “win” in this situation. Pretty bleak. President Hassan was honored with a silent clock.

6. The Death of Renee Walker (Day 8: 8:00 AM – 9:00 AM)

As the final season began to draw to a close, we all wondered if Jack would finally find a happy place. Nope, not exactly. After Jack and Renee consummate their relationship, a sniper takes out Renee in Jack’s apartment. He rushes her to the hospital but sadly there was no way to save her. Renee Walker had the distinction of being Jack’s final love interest and as much as we all wanted these two to “ride off into the sunset together”, it wouldn’t be 24 if that happened. Renee was honored with a silent clock.

5. Jack Says Goodbye to Chloe (Day 8: 3:00PM – 4:00PM)

As the final scene of the series, you knew it was going to be something emotional. How fitting was it that the final moments of the show had Jack saying goodbye to his closest friend Chloe and thanking her for ALL that she has done for him over the years? Remember Jack is now a U.S. fugitive and he takes the time out to tell her this.  The scene is all the more moving with Chloe looking up at the screen with tears in her eyes wishing him luck and promising to protect his family. Great stuff.

4. The “Death” of Tony Almeida (Day 5: 7:00PM – 8:00PM)

At the time, this was some powerful stuff – Tony has just been stabbed by Christopher Henderson with a needle, Jack rushes over to his best friend, picking him up in his arms. Tony’s last word’s, “She’s gone Jack” – a stark realization from Tony of the loss of his wife Michelle Dessler earlier in the day, and Jack beginning to cry as Tony’s body goes limp. Of course, now we know Tony survived to wreak some havoc during Day 7 but damn it, back then – it was a very moving scene.

3. The Death of Edgar Stiles (Day 5: 6:00PM – 7:00PM)

A nerve gas attack takes out the majority of the CTU staff, including poor Edgar Stiles. The helpless looks on the faces of those in the situation room as CTU personnel collapse all around them and the look on Chloe’s face as she sees her friend die right in front of her are chilling. The saddest part – Edgar calling out her name as she mouths his name. Edgar is honored with a silent clock.

2. The Death of Teri Bauer (Day 1: 11:00PM – 12:00AM)

Nobody saw this coming, Jack Bauer manages to stop the traitor Nina Myers and reunite with his daughter. However, his relief is short lived as he finds the dead body of his wife Teri in the IT room, murdered by Nina. Jack cradling her lifeless body as he begins to cry telling her he’s sorry with the music playing continues to send chills to this day. Jack Bauer has never been the same since. Teri was honored with a silent clock.

1. Jack Says Goodbye to Kim (Day 2: 10:00PM – 11:00PM)

So what could be sadder than Jack holding on to his wife’s lifeless body at the end of Day 1? This scene in which Jack is having to tell his daughter goodbye while piloting the plane with the nuclear bomb he  plans on crashing into the Mojave Desert. The look of hurt on Jack’s face as he tells his daughter goodbye and how much he loves her, the pain in Kim’s voice and the tears on her face as she apologizes to him for how she’s been treating him along with the fact that, at the moment, all they had were each other adds so much power to this scene.
