The death of Teri Bauer on “24’’ When a show kills off a major character, there is often a hidden reason that has nothing to do with the story. Maybe the actor wants to pursue new horizons. But when the writers of “24’’ killed off Jack Bauer’s wife, Teri, in the season 1 finale in 2002, they were making an important statement about “24’’ and about the world of terrorism. There are no happy endings on the horizon, they seemed to be saying, both on the show and in contemporary life. In the months right after 9/11, that was a bracing message.
