Farewell JJ

There have been five wonderful Criminal Minds seasons. Five seasons that have seen members of the BAU leave for one reason or another. Five seasons have also seen the arrival of new members that have gained the love and hearts of the fans. But in five seasons CM has not seen a night like tonight. The amount of collective sadness in the fandom tonight is impressive. Tonight we ceased to be Hotch, Prentiss, Rossi, Reid, Morgan or Garcia fans. Tonight all CM fans were JJ fans. And all CM fans had the Kleenex box ready for her exit. To say that AJ Cook’s unwilling departure from the show is a big loss for Criminal Minds would be an understatement. There are no words, there is not much comfort, there is just sadness. Sadness that it has come this far, that the day we’ve all dreaded is here. Sadness that next week JJ won’t be presenting the team with a new case. Just sadness.

AJ Cook, you are gifted with a lot of talent and the knights and ladies of the Criminal Minds Round Table bow to your incredible grace. Somehow, to say that we will miss you and that CM won’t be the same without you doesn’t seem enough. We wish you the absolute very best and thank the fates for the privilege to have had you on our favorite show.

Erica Messer, you were, as always, brilliant. Hats off for the subtleties and the respect you have shown JJ.

We Bow to AJ Cook!

Today is a sad day for all Criminal Minds Fans. AJ Cook's last day of filming has just ended and so does an important chapter in Criminal Minds history. We bow to this great lady and thank her for the incredible work she did on CM and all the wonderful moments she's offered us along the years. AJ is irreplaceable in the CM world and she will be sorely missed. She will always have a place in the fans' hearts. It will never be the same without her. The knights and ladies of the Round Table are certain that only great things will come her way in the future and wish her all the best.

The prestigious magazine Marie Claire posted a sharp and insightful article on its website about the ongoing situation concerning Criminal Minds actresses AJ Cook and Paget Brewster.


CBS's Criminal Minds Killing Off Its Women

CBS has decided to suddenly dismiss two of its pivotal female actresses on the hit show Criminal Minds — without any valid grounds. How could this happen?

The network is citing "creative reasons" for the release of A.J. Cook, who plays Jennifer Jareau, and the subsequent scaling back of Paget Brewster’s character, Emily Prentiss. Cook has been noticeably mum about the situation, although Brewster has been more vocal, using Twitter to state that claiming said creative reasons is "bullshit" and that the decision to fire Cook and diminish the Prentiss character are purely financial. If so, then CBS and the show’s creators are engaging in hypocritical activity, as from the get-go, the producers have always claimed that their show is unique because every actor is treated like family. Maybe Criminal Minds is then changing subject matter from FBI profilers to the Mob, as the producers are doing their best Corleone impersonations: “Leave your pride. Take the severance.”

Perhaps cutting out two characters wouldn’t be such a big deal except that there are only three females on the show. The remaining woman, Penelope Garcia (played by Kirsten Vangsness), is largely a periphery character. All of the stars, including Thomas Gibson, have expressed their dismay over the sudden decision, which will surely affect the story lines and the show’s audience, who have started a massive online petition to save their beloved characters.

Criminal Minds reveals the inner workings of serial killers and the Behavior Analysis Unit of the FBI. Since most of the murderers tend to be males slaughtering females, fans have become accustomed to the weekly massacres of women. But who knew that CBS would follow suit by unceremoniously killing off the careers of two of its most important actresses?

EXCLUSIVE: CBS’ Season 7 of its successful crime drama Criminal Minds is trimming the female portion of its cast for what I hear are financial reasons. I'm told the option of series regular A.J. Cook has not been picked up and co-star Paget Brewster is being made an offer to stay for only a reduced number of episodes next season, leaving fan favorite Kristen Vangsness as the only remaining full-time female cast member. I hear negotiations are underway with Brewster for a new deal that would keep her on the show. If she agrees, she will continue to be formally a regular but won't appear in every episode. Talks are also ongoing with Cook to possibly appear in several episodes next season to wrap her character Jennifer Jereau’s storyline.

Among the broadcast networks, CBS has been one of the most vocal about trying to rein in series costs, especially on its longer-running, more expensive dramas with large ensemble casts. Criminal Minds, which is produced by ABC Studios, CBS Studios and the Mark Gordon Co., has had seven regulars as part of its core cast. Staying on are Joe Mantegna, Thomas Gibson, Shemar Moore, Matthew Gray Gubler and Vangsness. With the exception of Vangsness’ quirky nerd godess Penelope Garcia, which has developed a strong following, the series has largely been perceived as a male-centered ensemble, with the boys getting most of the action.

Cook has been on the show since the first episode, joining after the pilot in 2005. Paget Brewster came on board nine episodes into Season 2, replacing original cast member Lola Glaudini. But aside from the Glaudini-Brewster switch and the forced replacement of original lead Mandy Patinkin with Mantegna following Patinkin's abrupt exit after Season 2, the cast on Criminal Minds has been pretty stable, with Gibson, Moore and Vangness all onboard since the pilot.

This past season, Criminal Minds spawned a spinoff, which has been picked up to series for midseason by CBS. That series, starring Forest Whitaker, is adding a new female regular cast member.

The 2010 National Memorial Day Concert

The 2010 National Memorial Day Concert airs tonight Sunday May 30th on PBS from 8:00 to 9:30 PM ET (check your local listings)

The above picture from rehearsal shows some of the wonderful people involved including Criminal Minds' own Joe Mantegna and AJ Cook. Joe will be co-hosting once again with Gary Sinise and AJ will be taking part in a dramatic reading with Tony and Emmy-award winning actress Blythe Danner.





Joe has participated in this event for nine years and it is one that he holds very dear to his heart. He has said that though not very politically involved, he whole-heartedly supports our troops and their families and is honored to have been part of this program for so long. This Tony-award winner has been co-hosting the concert for the last five-years with acclaimed actor Gary Sinise.

One of the main focuses of the program this year is honoring the sacrifices, suffering and love of a new generation of young military widows whose fallen spouses served in Iraq and Afghanistan. AJ will be performing a dramatic reading of the story of Taryn Davis who was 21 when her husband was killed in Iraq. It's a story of her journey to healing that led to her finding support with the Widows of Veterans Yahoo Group, to her bond with Glenda Davis who lost her husband to the Vietnam War, and eventually to her non-profit organization, American Widow Project. Two very different generations of women having to deal with the same pain. Blythe Danner will be sharing Glenda Davis' story with us.

AJ Cook to Perform at The National Memorial Day Concert

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Blythe Danner and "Criminal Minds" star A.J. Cook will portray widows of American soldiers at the 26th annual PBS National Memorial Day Concert on the Capitol lawn in Washington.

Danner and Cook will tell the story of Taryn Davis, who was 21 when her husband was killed in Iraq. The young woman befriended another widow who lost her husband during the Vietnam War and was inspired to create the American Widow Project, a community for war widows.

Danner and Cook will perform Davis' story as part of the annual tribute to the troops. Gary Sinise and Joe Mantegna (mahn-TAYN'-yuh) will host the program, also set to feature performances by Lionel Richie, Brad Paisley and Yolanda Adams.

PBS will broadcast the concert live on May 30.
