so I'm reading DEEP magazine checking out all the surfer girls and gnarly waves when I see an ad for the West Beach Music and Arts Festival... actually two ads and even a story about this year's event..according to the article, Santa Barbara's biggest annual music fest was saved from certain doom and will be allowed to happen as scheduled..everything is set, tickets are being sold, the two young businessmen who produce the festival wanted to bring their love of reggae, rock and electro music to the beach.. people responded and the festival has been a success in the past..but not so fast this year..the City of Santa Barbara Parks Dept has an issue with all this..the Parks Director, Nancy Rapp, (the fat lady in this scene), has an issue with a bunch of young folks having some summertime fun..some neighbors and businesses close to West Beach have an issue with a bun
ch of young people having fun...so after giving mixed signals, the City Council pulls the plug and tells the promoters the show can't go on..too much trouble, too many people, too loud, too much o' nothing...geez, we know that Santa Barbara has a reputation for stodginess, the town of the newly wed or nearly dead..and the nearly dead want no music festival this summer..now I find this rather pathetic for a number of reasons..first, SB has Fiesta for a week, Wine and Beer Festivals, 4th of July, Volleyball at West Beach, dog festivals down State Street, the Film Festival for 7 days and now they are worried about a 3 day beach festival..because some neighbors complained?? Look, the neighbors live next to the beach and people hang out at the beach, so they be
tter expect events to happen there..it's only natural..pulling the plug at this point is absurd..they should let the party go on and deal with the issues next time..apparently a guy named Tony Romasanto, who owns a hotel by the beach has a lot of pull with the city council..who knows, maybe he has mob ties and threatened to whack Frank, Dale and Mike!! and Nancy Rapp, the Parks director who makes a six figure salary is so incompetent she can't keep public restrooms or wading pools for kids open because of budget issues...she should resign immediately and the city should hire someone who is physically fit to run the dept..and maybe this dept should be privatized, contract it out..I'm a union guy but I'm also a capitalist...and the parks should be making the city some money..and the musicians are capitalists too..no crime in making money doing what you love..and the claim that young women are urinating on the neighbors lawns..well, how is that a bad thing..it provides some fixed nitrogen for the flowers and who wouldn't want to see a little quim in broad daylight in their front yard..I mean really..biology is cooool....
