When Camarillo Mental Hospital, AKA Hotel California, was shut down years ago by a deranged Ronald Reagan, I think I know where all the crazy people ended up...in the newspaper biz! I have never seen a more dysfunctional group of people in my life!! They write a story and expect a medal. They take a picture and expect an award. They take a crap and expect a holiday!
They parade around De La Guerra Plaza with duct tape over their pretty mouths..that is still an unresolved sexual fantasy for me by the way.. but when I show up on a date with a roll of duct tape, the woman slams the door in my facebook!!
Well, now it seems that my two fave newspaper publishers, Wendy and Nancy, don't want to have anything to do with each other..Nancy Crawford-Hall of the SYVJ went and hired some news people in an effort to be taken more seriously (than the News-Press), according to Managing Editor Barbara Lanz-Mateo. says Barbara: Last fall, when I told people I had started work for the Santa Ynez Valley Journal after I closed my own publication, Coastal Woman, the response I received many times was the blunt question, "Why?" followed by some tsk-tsking or words to the effect that I had sold out by going to work for a Wendy McCaw clone.
Hardly.
Yes, Nancy Crawford-Hall has very strong opinions, some pretty deep pockets, and like Wendy McCaw, she is a blonde. (I put the "e" at the end of that word voluntarily.)
But unlike the newspaper on the other side of the hill, the journalists at the Santa Ynez Valley Journal are pretty much left to do their work without the publisher interfering with what stories editors assign or how those stories are written.

So why did Barb ditch her own magazine and hitch her wagon to a wealthy rancher! None of my business but maybe to be closer to the casino? Some of these old gals are heavy into bingo!
You can draw your own parallels between her and Travis as editors, but Barb seems to have more balls than the T. Now, let's see if I can separate the owner from the editor....as a matter of fact, the less I see and hear of Nancy Crawford-Hall, the better....goes for you, too, Wendy! and me, too!
